Alternative Education

Te Whare O Te Awa Ako is a partnership between Kāpiti College and Paraparaumu College, funded by the Ministry of Education, that provides alternative education and support services for rangatahi who are disengaged from mainstream schooling and are unlikely to thrive in traditional classroom environments.

Te Whare O Te Awa Ako

The programme is designed to support learners through a holistic approach that fosters academic progress, personal growth, and social development, with the ultimate aim of re-engaging students with learning and improving long-term life outcomes.

Intended outcomes for rangatahi attending Te Awa Ako include:

  • Improved academic achievement, such as progress in literacy, numeracy, and attainment of qualifications (e.g. NCEA).
  • Increased engagement in education, demonstrated by better attendance, participation, and motivation to learn.
  • Development of social and emotional skills, promoting overall wellbeing and mental resilience.
  • Positive behavioural changes, including reduced truancy, decreased disruptive behaviour, and strengthened coping mechanisms for managing life challenges.
  • Expanded pathways, enabling transitions into further education, training, or employment.
